If you’ve already begun your wellness journey, you would know that it doesn’t just focus on physical health–but is linked to holistic health– that is, it incorporates multiple dimensions of health and wellbeing that all work together in harmony. It's an active process of being aware and making positive choices that take you towards optimal holistic health and wellbeing.

In this blog, we discuss the mind-body-spirit connection, how it’s related to holistic health and wellness, and how chiropractic can improve your brain and body connection.

What is the mind-body-spirit connection?

You’ve probably heard of the “mind-body-spirit” connection before, and if you’re like most people, you might be unsure of what exactly it means.

In simple terms, it refers to how your physical health is interlinked with your thoughts, feelings and behaviour.

For example, we might experience headaches when we’re stressed - that’s a perfect example of how pent up thoughts occupy your mind, which in turn affects your body.

Stress often originates from:

  • Physical (e.g. injury, poor lifestyle, lack of exercise, lack of sleep)
  • Chemical (e.g. diet, smoking, excessive alcohol intake, environmental pollution)
  • Emotional (e.g. life situation, career, family, relationships)

How is it related to holistic health and wellness?

Every moment, your brain and body are receiving cues from your environment that send messages along your spinal chord. This is essential for maintaining the necessary balance between your brain and body you need to function.

Your body does a great job at processing different signals from your environment and managing your stress levels. However, when this becomes too much for your body to handle, it can lose it’s ability to cope with more stress which can eventually lead to physical health issues and spinal subluxations.

Chiropractic and the brain-body connection

Recent research has shown that chiropractic adjustments can positively impact the chemistry of your brain by altering the levels of biochemical pain markers. These are chemical substances that affect how you perceive pain.

Similar to how oxytocin is linked to both a reduction in pain sensitivity and an uplift in mood, neurotensin is linked to both inhibiting pain and controlling dopamine. These chemicals can help to reduce pain when they are more readily available in the body.

Recent studies have found an improvement in motor control and a decrease in cortisol levels following chiropractic adjustments.

At ATLAS, we’ve seen first-hand just how chiropractic care can strengthen the connection between your brain and body. Our clients frequently experience less stress and less pain after a short adjustment.

Aging, healing, and your entire life experience happen through a constant concert of communication and coordination between your brain and body. Ensuring that it functions well is essential for a healthy and happy life.
