About The Guide

Energy isn't just about how much sleep you get or how well you eat — although those matter. The framework of your body plays a much bigger role than most people realise. When your posture is inefficient, your body spends energy just holding itself upright against gravity, leaving less for everything else. Dr. Ben's letter in this issue explores how your physical, mental, and emotional energy systems are all connected, and why the spine sits at the centre of that equation. This issue of ATLAS Quarterly offers practical ways to protect and restore the energy your body needs to function well. Inside you'll find:

01
Energy and Your Spine
Dr. Ben's feature article explains that your body has one framework to last a lifetime, and that framework directly affects how much energy you have. Poor posture — a body that "hangs" or carries the head forward — costs your body significant energy just to stay upright. For every half centimetre your head is carried forward beyond normal, your brain uses exponentially more energy to compensate. Dr. Ben uses a helpful analogy: poor posture is like setting your thermostat to 21 degrees while leaving all the doors and windows open in winter. You don't collapse, but the energy waste is constant. Chiropractic care helps restore structural balance so your body can direct energy toward living rather than compensating.
02
Givers and Takers
+
"The Naked Truth About Your Body" section highlights a simple but powerful idea: your body's natural intelligence works best when you feed it energy givers rather than energy takers. Energy givers include music, nature, movement, community, breathwork, whole foods, consistent sleep, journalling, meditation, hydration, sunlight, and rest. Energy takers include fear, alcohol, negativity, social media, overworking, clutter, focusing on the past, inactivity, inconsistent sleep, dehydration, screen time, resentment, junk food, and stress. It's not about being perfect — it's about becoming more aware of what's adding to your energy and what's quietly draining it.
03
Practise Good Posture
+
This issue's "New Habit" section offers two simple ways to conserve energy throughout your day. First, stand with your weight evenly distributed on both legs — most people lean on one side without realising it. A practical tip: put a note on your fridge that says "stand on both legs," and each time you see it, close your eyes for two to three seconds and find an even balance. Second, sit with your weight evenly on both sitting bones, and avoid staying seated for too long. These small adjustments help your body spend less energy compensating for imbalance and more energy on what matters to you.
04
Tools and Community
+
The lending library features three books focused on energy and wellbeing: Energy For Life by Alix Bradfield, which explores whether genes or lifestyle choices shape your health as you age; SD Protocol by Dr. Wayne Todd, a practical guide for managing energy if you tend toward burnout or sympathetic dominance; and Dopamine Nation by Dr. Anna Lembke, which explains how the pursuit of constant pleasure can actually drain your energy and what to do about it. The visiting artist this quarter is The 33PRESS, a Hong Kong-based artist and photographer displaying works from her solo exhibition at ATLAS. The studio playlist is curated by ATLAS Founder Dr. Ben, and the bi-annual juice cleanse is open for sign-ups.
