About The Guide

Sleep is one of the most important things your body does — and one of the first things to suffer when life gets busy. But poor sleep isn't just about feeling tired. It affects your immune system, your ability to think clearly, your mood, and how well your body repairs itself. Your nervous system plays a central role in all of this, controlling the rhythm that tells your body when to rest and when to wake. This issue of ATLAS Quarterly, introduced by Dr. Ariel, explores why sleep matters far more than most people realise, and what you can do to start improving it. Inside you'll find:

01
Sleep and Your Nerves
Dr. Ariel's feature article explains why the World Health Organisation has called sleep loss an epidemic in developed nations — and why Hong Kong's late-night culture makes it especially relevant here. Poor sleep can weaken your immune system, affect cognition, disrupt hormones, and shorten your lifespan. Your nervous system regulates your sleep-wake cycle, and one of the biggest disruptors is screen light before bed, which stimulates the optic nerve and suppresses melatonin production. Chiropractic adjustments help reduce sympathetic stress in the nervous system, which is why many ATLAS clients report better sleep as one of the first improvements they notice.
02
Sleep Patterns and HRV
+
This issue encourages you to study your sleeping patterns — because they matter more than most people think. Sleep supports your brain's ability to learn, memorise, and make clear decisions, and it restocks your immune system's resources. The issue also explains how Heart Rate Variability (HRV) testing can show how well your autonomic nervous system is functioning and whether your body is getting the rest it needs. At ATLAS, HRV scans are used to measure your nervous system's balance and guide care planning. When sympathetic stress is reduced through chiropractic adjustments, HRV often improves — and so does sleep.
03
Rhythms and Routines
+
Your body runs on a circadian rhythm — a 24-hour internal clock controlled by a part of the brain that responds to light and dark. When that rhythm is disrupted by late nights, inconsistent routines, or too much artificial light, your sleep quality suffers. Dr. Damian shares his own approach: setting non-negotiable sleep routines, prioritising physical exercise, and keeping a consistent bedtime. This section also explores the connection between chiropractic care and sleep, asking two simple questions that help you consider whether a body with more ease and better structure might also be a body that sleeps more soundly.
04
Tools and Community
+
The ATLAS team share their favourite sleep tools: Dr. Ariel recommends Natural Factors Magnesium to support the calming side of the nervous system, a Therapeutica Sleeping Pillow to maintain a healthy cervical curve, and Mack's silicone earplugs. Dr. Ben recommends the OOLER Sleep System for temperature regulation and the Earthing Elite sleeping mat. Dr. Damian recommends the Emma Mattress for firm spinal support. The issue also features the ATLAS 5th Birthday event — "Healthy Humans & Happy Hounds" — a wellness fundraiser for Catherine's Puppies, plus the post-adjustment rhythm (four habits to follow after every visit), and a sleep playlist curated by Dr. Eleanor. The lending library includes Why We Sleep by Matthew Walker, The Power of When by Dr. Michael Breus, and Creative Visualization by Shakti Gawain. The visiting artist is photographer Amber Xiyue Chen.
