Easy Ergonomic Workspace Adjustments

A recent poll shows that 86% of people work at a desk job where they feel uncomfortable with their workspace design. According to the survey, employees would enjoy higher productivity, have less stress and feel pleasanter if they had an ergonomically correct workspace.

Poor posture and unsatisfactory work equipment lead to serious issues such as

  • Irreversible damage to the spine
  • Lowered metabolic rate
  • Postural aging
  • Respiratory dysfunction
  • Spinal degeneration

Tips for a Healthier Workday

What can you do to avoid these problems? There are some simple steps you can easily implement at your workplace that save your bank and your back:

Avoid excessive reaching. Commonly used items should be placed within arm’s reach to avoid strain, twisting your spine or shifting your weight from side to side.

Consider going hands-free. A regular phone is usually held to the side with your neck bent and shoulder contracted. Instead, a headset or hands-free phone allows you to move around and keep proper posture.

Examine your chair. You should be able to sit without slouching shoulders or hips forward with both feet on the ground and knees bent at 90 degrees. A lumbar cushion may be beneficial in keeping your hips aligned with your shoulders, or an exercise ball can help you sit correctly and strengthen your core.

Look at your equipment. Your keyboard and mouse should be at elbow height with a cushion under the wrists. The computer screen should be at eye level so that you can look straight ahead.

Think about proper lifting and turning. Use your core muscles when you turn from side to side. When lifting, stand directly in front of the object and don’t bend to the side.

Get away from the noise. Noise pollution can cause headaches or strain from trying to hear. Ear plugs, headphones or simply closing your door or window may help.

Stand more. A desk or workstation that allows you to stand will burn calories and increase your flexibility and joint mobility. The best idea is to sit and stand intermittently. There are even treadmill desks that may be worth a look!

Though some employers may not realise the importance of proper ergonomics, with these small actions, you can take responsibility and improve your workspace, which in turn has positive effects on the way you move, function and look.
