Six Solutions to Stress Reduction

Stress is a part of your life no matter who you are. There are three types of stress: physical, such as injuries from a slip and fall or motor vehicle accident; emotional, involved in the juggling of your work, home and social life, and chemical, which comes from factors such as diet, pollution and medications.

Your Body’s Response to Stress

Chronic stress will affect your ability to function with your family, at your job and even in your mind. It triggers your body’s “fight or flight” response, releasing adrenaline and cortisol to speed heart rate, breathing and metabolism. While it’s a fantastic response in dangerous situations, when it goes on for extended periods, will impair your health and wellbeing.

Though they may be ever-present, there are simple ways to reduce the effects of stress on your mind and body:

  • Meditate. Sit quietly for 10-20 minutes a day, focusing only on your breathing is possible.
  • Meditate and move. Combine meditation with movement as found in tai chi, qi gong or even walking.
  • Forgive yourself. Remember that the past is the past. Let yourself have “do-overs” when necessary.
  • Expect excellence, not perfection. To continue trying is the key to success.
  • Sing. Laugh. Dance. Seriously! Certain studies have supported that each can cause the release of feel-good hormones.

Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.”

Choosing the Right Mindset

The modern approach to medicine has tended to treat mind and body health as two separate entities. Recent research, however, suggests that the two are linked. More studies are underway that incorporate the mind and body with belief systems, meaning that what you think can affect your physical health.
